A Turkish-Cypriot pair excelled at the Pan-Cyprian Beach
Volley Championship
Two Turkish-Cypriots, Meliz Sarikaya and Aisen
Tansou were the stars of the second Pan-Cyprian beach volley championship
2003 that took place this weekend in Limassol. The pair managed
to receive the praise of the public in conjunction with first
place.
The 35 year old Aisen Tansou and the 24 years old Meliz Sarikaya
impressed the public by winning 4 matches in total.
The final match, againt Despina Constantinou and Joanna Letcheva
was astonishing. The Turkish-Cypriot pair took the first set 21
-11. Constantinou and Letcheva tied the match by winning the second
set 21 - 19. The fate of the title was judged in the 'time-break'
which the Turkish-Cypriot pair won by 15-13.
This event marked the end of and the beginning of a new era, since
it was the first time since 1974 where Turkish-Cypriot athletes
participated in an official event organized by the Republic of
Cyprus. Sarikaya and Tansou registered in the CYVF record after
submitting the documents required by the FIVB.
Karagianni/Christophorou and Pelagia/Faouta shared the third place.
